Mount Athos

Agios Oros includes twenty Holy Monasteries and other monastic institutions, which function as men’s holy communes. In smaller facilities, i.e. in hermitages, cells and holy seats live smaller male brotherhoods, ascetics and hermits. It is unofficially characterized as an “Autonomous Monastic State”, i.e. a self-governing part of the Greek State, located on the Athos peninsula of Chalkidiki in Macedonia.

Since 1988 it has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites.

The entry of women is prohibited, but any man, citizen or foreigner, regardless of religion, can enter Mount Athos as long as he has a written permit, the so-called Diamonitiri.

The Athos of monasteries. An all-consuming, mystifying, age-old place.

Where the monks literally live in cells hanging on steep cliffs, away from the order of the monasteries, ascetics until the end of their lives. Mount Athos is a special place. It is a designated place, where they are monks, they are consecrated people of God. People who wanted to work for the love of God, to worship him with all their strength, in order to help the world with their prayers and their good example. Becoming a monk is not that easy. First of all, it is a call from God. This place, Mount Athos, has been chosen by the Virgin Mary.

The restored Zygou Monastery

Agiou gregoriou

If you want to get to know (even the women) what a 10th century monastery of Saints was like, then you only have to spare a few hours of your vacation to visit the ruins of the Monastery of Zygos very close to Ouranoupoli. It is one of the oldest monastic institutions of the Athonian peninsula and its restoration is very careful.
