Mount Athos comprises twenty sacred monasteries and other monastic institutions, which function as human sanctuaries. Smaller male fraternities, ascetics and hermitages live in smaller establishments, that is, in squats, cells and sacred seats. It is unofficially described as an “Autonomous Monastic State”, that is, a self-governing part of the Greek State, located on the Athos peninsula of Halkidiki, Macedonia.
Since 1988 it has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
The entry of women is forbidden, but any man, national or alien, regardless of religion, can enter Mount Athos as long as he has a written permit, the so-called Transnatorium.
Athos of the monasteries. A place devastating, mysterious, age-old.
The monks live literally in cells hanging on steep cliffs, far from the monastery class, ascetic to the end of their lives. Mount Athos is a special place. It is a destined place where they live, they are dedicated people of God. People who wanted to work for the love of God, to worship him with all their might, to help the world with their prayers and good example. Becoming a monk is not so easy. It is primarily a call to God. This place, Mount Athos, has been chosen by Our Lady.
The restored Zygos Monastery
If you would like to know (even women) what a 10th century Mount Athos monastery was, then you have only a few hours of your vacation to visit the ruins of Zygos Monastery very close to Ouranoupolis. It is one of the oldest monastic foundations of the Athenian peninsula and its restoration is very attentive.
