Archaeological site of Dion
About 10 kilometers south of Katerini, there is the impressive archaeological site of Dion or “city of Zeus” where it covers an area of 1,500 acres. Some of the monuments you can admire are the sanctuaries of Olympian Zeus and Demeter, the mansion of Dionysus, the Hellenistic theater of Zeus, the Roman theater and the Asklepiion.
At a short distance from Katerini, there is the residence of the gods of mythology, the mythical mountain of Olympus. With the highest peak in Greece, Mytikas (2,917m.)
Litochoro
The area is also of increased interest for those who wish to visit notable religious monuments and pilgrimages. At the western end of town, among the last houses, is the picturesque chapel of Agia Paraskevi. In the grove of the Holy Apostles you will see the homonymous church and enjoy the frozen water of Olympus in the fountain there. At the highest point of this route, there is the chapel of Prophet Ilias, from where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the area.
Elatochori
It is one of the most famous winter tourist resorts in the region and hosts the only ski center of the prefecture, a beautiful village built at an altitude of 800 meters. Elatochori consists of two settlements. The traditional settlement, Old Elatochori and the current settlement. The traditional settlement was destroyed when the entire village was burned by the Germans on January 27, 1944. With the opening of the ski center, the old settlement experienced rapid agro-tourism development, without losing even the least bit of its traditional character. The Ski Center of Elatochori at an altitude of 1450m, is located in a privileged location with an amazing view towards Mount Olympus and Aliakmonas. It is only 8 km from the picturesque village of Elatochori, 36 km from Katerini.
